Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a virus that can cause multiple stages of disease. The most advanced stage of HIV infection is called AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome). In general, people who have an advanced stage of HIV infection or AIDS are at higher risk for some types of cancer.
Here, we will provide a brief overview of HIV and discuss the risks of certain cancers, what people with HIV can do to reduce their cancer risk or find it early, and how these cancers are generally treated.
